Location of Nuevo Vallarta
Bahia de Banderas
Believe it or not - Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta aren't even in the same state, yet only a few miles apart
Nuevo Vallarta, just like Puerto Vallarta a few miles South, is part of the Bahia de Banderas. This bay is divided by the state border between Jalisco and Nayarit.
Puerto Vallarta belongs to the state of Jalisco while Nuevo Vallarta is located in Nayarit.
The distance between the international airport of Puerto Vallarta (PVR) to the imaginary center of Nuevo Vallarta is about 11km/7mls. It's an easy drive of around 15 minutes.
Bahia de Banderas has its most Northern point in Punta Mita, while Cabo Corrientes marks the Southern limit. Both points are connected by a coastline of around 100 kilometers or 62 miles with lots of attractive beaches and a spectacular landscape with the Sierra Madre mountains in the background.
However, Bahia de Banderas is not only a geographical instance, but also a political one. Beside the actual Banderas Bay, there's also a municipality with the same name. This municipality includes the entire Nayarit part of the Bay, stretching from Nuevo Vallarta to Punta Mita, and even more towards Northeast up to the town of Compostela. Yes, it's a little confusing.
